Course Description

At the core of the course is the question how feminism has become a demonized and ridiculed “F-word” in an age when issues of gender and sexuality are at the center of constant, often explosive political debates. These debates often connect media representation and political representation but tend to do so in simplistic ways that bypass or distort decades of sophisticated feminist theory and practice. We will trace back such representations through the decades around case studies that encompass film, video, television and new media practices. The case studies come from the United States and beyond, taking into full account the global interconnectedness of media production and consumption as well as the transnational travel of feminist ideas. The main goal of the course is to evaluate how useful feminist thinking is to understanding the relays between media and political representation; and to develop a lasting critical apparatus to analyzing the politics of gender and sexuality in the media.

Inspired by More Musical Genres & Feminism

From last Monday's (11/25/2013) group teaching projects, I was really amazed by every group. Each group taught me something new and made me realize something that I wouldn't have if it weren't for these group teaching lessons.

I was inspired by every group, but more specifically, I was inspired to do more research on the group that presented on the topic of Music & Women. I wanted to expand on their topic, and talk about more musical genres that they weren't able to touch upon- there is a lot of musical genres and feminist artists in the world and a 30-min lesson cannot entail them all; but I still do believe some of these strong musical feminist artists deserves to be recognized.

Bitch Magazine does a dedication almost every month of Great New Songs from Feminist Artists. These artists range in all sorts of different musical genres- Punk, Punk Rock, Folk Music, Soul, Indie, African Music, and even Hip Hop. All these musical genres have strong female Feminist artists that do support women rights and who do believe they ARE feminists. They don't take the word 'Feminist' as a demonized association, but rather are proud to call themselves female artists that support feminism.

Here is the link to Bitch Magazine's 'Nine Great New Songs for September From Feminist Artists', if you have the time, you should listen to the diverse range of songs that these artists performed to, they're quite powerful and very different than popular music.
