Course Description

At the core of the course is the question how feminism has become a demonized and ridiculed “F-word” in an age when issues of gender and sexuality are at the center of constant, often explosive political debates. These debates often connect media representation and political representation but tend to do so in simplistic ways that bypass or distort decades of sophisticated feminist theory and practice. We will trace back such representations through the decades around case studies that encompass film, video, television and new media practices. The case studies come from the United States and beyond, taking into full account the global interconnectedness of media production and consumption as well as the transnational travel of feminist ideas. The main goal of the course is to evaluate how useful feminist thinking is to understanding the relays between media and political representation; and to develop a lasting critical apparatus to analyzing the politics of gender and sexuality in the media.

A funny coincidence

Sasha Stock

This is certainly not an academic post, but I did notice a funny coincidence. In one of the Keeping Up With The Kardashian's episode, one of the "real" situations included Kourtney having a crush on and then making out with a woman named Jackie. This actress, Jackie Cruz, is one of the cast members in Orange is the New Black! It is a funny coincidence considering all of the gay and lesbian themes found in Orange is the New Black.

Jackie and Kourtney on K.U.W.T.K.

  1. I remember watching that episode and up until now I had no idea she was actually an actress. This definitely makes me question the authenticity of reality tv. I have to be honest and say that i sometimes get annoyed when I hear of reality shows being partly fake and staged because I feel that they are just doing whatever they can to make good tv and get higher ratings while forgetting that many viewers especially young female fans of kuwtk are heavily influenced by the show and try to be just like them without realizing its not all reality.

  2. This is so crazy. I totally remember this and this just goes to show that reality tv is not what actually happens on a day to day. Whether or not Jackie is an actual "friend" of Kourtney I highly doubt, but that's the fun of reality tv. Most likely Jackie's good ole publicist got her this gig, by keeping well informed. Just makes me more annoyed that their girl encounter was so staged and totally to scandalize the television show.
